THE MUCH-MALIGNED CGI' upgrades'/ inserts: many purists are still tearing their hair out at these all too obvious 21st Century mini-makeovers, but in all honestly I do not mind them, I especially like the establishing shots of Luke and the boys on their hover car as they glide into the small town holding. It's created a pattern of terminally endless, spiralling out- of- control 'Braindead Blockbusters': there is no doubt that fantasy film making imagery has come on in leaps and bounds, -a direct result of STAR WARS '77 proving there was Megabucks to be made in backing elaborate sci-fi movies-however the required 'moviemaking-by-committee' has ushered in a dreaded 'we must try and please everyone' train of thought that has yielded autistic screenwriting. It's Mindless yes this stuff is teriffic to look at, its very entertaining to sit back and let it all wash over you but really there is not a great deal to tax the brain cells other than escapist fluff and nonsense-however, it's GLORIOUS fluff-n-nonsense. The 'Mystical Tosh' stuff, a sort of pseudo-Religious licence to waffle on about Druid-like Space Magic sorry, I find this stuff terrible and wincible. Teriffic, stirring music throughout by Williams that Martial, Military-like motif had been done before over a decade earlier, in the Thunderbirds theme, but this film score explores this territory greater still, the Cantina stuff and the RS-D2 eloctronic beeps herald in much sonic soundscape delight. Star Wars '77 has teriffic retro-fitted set design, and great charm like the uneasy shots where Lukes parked 'hover car' is held up in mid-air, it's obvious 'grounded' axle conveniently hidden by a strategically-placed rock! Early screenings revealed a very noticable 'blue fringing' around the model spacecraft, however this seems to have been Godlessly scrubbed out later by the ILM tech boys. It's taking PRACTICAL EFFECTS to the nth degree: yes, the first film looks downright primitive compared to what was to follow much later on in this series, but its great how you can spot guys in masks, elaborate glass paintings, tangible model spaceships, and even the then-revolutionary Motion Control System is relatively straightforwards to get your head around as to how it works. It's shot on FILM far more pleasing on the eye than later HD camera excursions, which gave a sort of souped-up un-natural, overly-glossy look to this material. I look at this film more through the eyes of a 'film enthusiast' for mostly Historical reasons, like I say I am no uber-enthusiast and never have been.ДЄs a rank outsider who nevertheless appreciates significant strides in fantasy cinema History, here is my take on STAR WARS '77: Someone on this board astutely observed that it is now a whopping 44 years since the 1977 release thats the same timeframe between Kong '33 and Star Wars '77. Count me out as a ''Wars Head', to me its really extremely well-minted visual/ aural candy, however there is no doubt the success of this picture shaped the future of Cinema, like nothing before it.
